The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) connects the Army to the American people at the national, regional, and chapter levels. We are a nonprofit educational and professional development association serving America’s Total Army, including active duty Soldiers, National Guard & Reserves, Veterans, Gold Star families, Army civilians, our industry partners, and supporters of a strong national defense. Our support extends to the families of all of these groups.
While we have a number of programs that we provide such as scholarships, NCO and Soldier of the Year program, entrepreneurship seminars, school supply give aways and deployment/redployment support, this year we are focused focused on our gas voucher program and our Mystery Bus.
The National Training Center, Fort Irwin has been listed as one of 7 military installations that are considered to be remote and isolated. Soldiers and family members who are in need of specialty care have to drive over 50 miles one way and only reimbursed .22 cents a mile. As you can imagine, this gets costly with the price of gas for some families who may already have a difficult time making ends meet. The gas voucher program will help offset those costs. Service members or their families just have to show their appointment slip given to them by the health provider and they will be issued a gas card.
Our second program that we call the Mystery Bus. It is our way of helping prevent suicides. While suicides decreased last year it is still an issue among our active duty and veteran community. Like everyone, we at AUSA would like to see that number go down to zero. Our strategy to help reverse this trend is to give soldiers an opportunity to engage more with the community and with each other as well as with their leadership out of the uniform. To that end AUSA is seeking your help in continuing our “Mystery Bus” excursions and other morale activities.
This past year, Soldiers and their leadership had the opportunity to attend an LA Kings hockey game and for many fo them it was their first game. They also had the opportunity to play paint ball and attend a Tough Mudder event. We would like to see this grow to other excursions such as an entrepreneur round table with industry/ business leaders and community projects.
