PINGOLF RULES AND FORMAT

1. Quick Overview

This event will use the PinGolf format, which essentially is the same idea as playing regular golf but with a twist of Pinball mixed in. All players will compete in foursomes (or threesomes if players drop out last minute), playing through a course made up of 9 total pinball machines. Each Pin-Hole will consist of a pinball machine with an objective that could be strictly score based or objective based. The number of balls it takes for the player to complete that objective will represent the number of Pin-Strokes earned for that hole. Each Pin-Hole will have a designated par of 3. For example, if the player completes the objective in 2 balls, they will record a score a “stroke” of 2 on their scorecard. If they need all 5 balls to complete the objective they will record a 5 on their scorecard. Should a player not complete that objective, he or she will receive a 6 on their scorecard for that Pin-Hole.

2. Qualifying – 9 Holes (9 machines)

Players will be divided into 4 players groups and will play in that group for the duration of qualifying. Each group will be assigned a different starting Pin-Hole (machine) and will play either all 9 “front” holes or all 9 “back” holes in any order until the entire course is completed (9 Pin-Holes in all).

Here are some examples of the various objectives:

Iron Man: Start Monger Multiball

Fish Tales: Score a Monster Fish

Stars: Score 40,000

At the end of qualifying, all players will be ranked with the highest qualifier having the fewest “golf” strokes – meaning the player who needed the fewest number of balls to reach each objective across all 9 games. The top 12 players will advance to the “A” Finals, with the top 4 seeds receiving a bye and advancing straight to the semi-finals.

The remaining 12-players(places 13th through 24th) will advance to the “B” consolation finals, with seeds 13-16 receiving a bye and advancing straight to the “B” consolation semi-finals.

In the event that two or more players are tied on the qualifying bubble, such that not all of the tied players can advance to the final rounds, a tiebreaking procedure will be utilized. A single game will be played on a machine selected by tournament officials from the qualifying bank of games. The tied players will play, in randomly determined order, in a multiplayer game on the selected machine, and will subsequently be ranked in the order of their scores on that game.

3. Finals

For the finals, the tournament banks will be divided into three separate courses made up of three pin-holes each. Each group will play one of these three courses.

Each four-player game will be played and scored using the same Pin-Golf scoring used in the qualifying rounds. Each round will consist of 3 games played. A minimum score per finals round is 3 strokes, and a maximum score per finals round is 18 strokes. Stoke count from qualifying rounds do not carry over into finals; all finalists start the round with zero strokes.

The group that contains the highest-seeded player gets first choice of available courses or order of play. The highest-seeded player within each group may choose either the course to be played, or the order of play. If the highest-seeded player chooses order of play, the remaining players may choose their order, in descending order of seeding, and choice of machine then goes to the next highest-seeded player in the group. Conversely, if the highest-seeded player chooses the machine to be played, then the next highest-seeded player chooses the order of play, with the remaining players choosing order of play in decreasing order of seeding. Once a player verbally announces their game choice, or chooses position, that decision cannot be changed.

If at any point a high-seed player declines to make a choice, the choice is deferred to the next highest-seeded player, as appropriate. The affected group still retains its order of choice among groups, however. If no player in a group will make a choice, the choice(s) are determined by tournament officials, who may or may not choose randomly.

Note that the original seeding of players when entering the final rounds from qualifying is used in every round. At no time does a player’s seeding change from round to round; therefore the advantage of qualifying in first place can be significant.

No group may select a bank which has already been selected by a group in the same round (unless machine malfunctions have made this unavoidable; tournament officials may choose to provide additional or substitute machines, however). Courses may only be chosen once by a competitor during finals.

When all games have been completed by a group, each player will have a point total for the round. The players with the top two point totals from each group will advance.

4. Order of Play

When starting the first hole of the tournament, position will be determined by the order drawn in Matchplay Events. For all subsequent holes the competitor with the lowest score on the previous Pin-Hole takes the honor of going first at the next Pin-Hole. The competitor with the second lowest score plays next and so on. If two or more competitors have the same score following a Pin-Hole, they play the next Pin-Hole in the same order as at the previous Pin-Hole.

5. Extra Balls and Other Machine Settings

All attempts will be made for extra balls to be disabled for all machines. Should a player earn an extra ball, they will play it as part of the same Pin-Stroke on that particular Pin-Hole. Games will be set to tournament mode if available. Expect ball savers to be limited if not off.

6. Rulings and Malfunctions

All rulings and malfunctions will be based on the rules for the IFPA/PAPA Ruleset.

Tilting someone elses ball will result in a one stroke penalty for the offender. The player whose ball was tilted will wait until their turn is up again and play with 1 stroke subtracted from their score.

Playing someone elses ball (playing out of turn) will result in a 1 stroke penalty.
