Mountain Resort Summer Operations 2.0: The adventure continues!
The low-hanging fruit of summer operations has been picked, and the market is maturing. Resorts in robust summer markets have found their own unique set of activities: mountain bike flow trails, adventure parks, zip lines, mountain coasters. Campgrounds, gem mining, bungee trampolines, glamping.
Enter “Summer Op’s 2.0” – a deeper dive into the creation of a more comprehensive and curated mountain experience, with the goal of expanding demographic reach, increasing spend, lengthening visit times, encouraging repeat visitation, and establishing a unique destination within the ever-growing competitive marketplace.
Think brand-specific theming. Comfortable places to play, eat, relax in the shade, enjoy water. Edutainment, where interpretive signage and knowledgeable guides tell the local story. Friendly and entertaining staff. And lots of Instagram moments!
Using examples from across the country, including the case study of the new Lost Forest at Aspen Snowmass, this session will explore how resorts may continue to evolve their summer operations to meet the growing demands of the market.
Session 3 – Barbara Nazarewicz, RLA, ASLA and Chris Carter, PE
Albany Skyway: Repurposing Infrastructure for 21st Century Albany

Hear from members of Stantec’s interdisciplinary team about the initial planning and design phase to complete a structure assessment and feasibility study, understand traffic impacts, preliminary design of the public space, and a robust public engagement process.
Session 4 –Richie Snyder, Sue Davis and Jeffrey Anthony, RLA
Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Saratoga Springs
The development of Downtown Saratoga Springs dates back to the arrival of the first European settlers in the region. Historically, Saratoga Springs was known for its mineral water springs and health vacations. As the city evolved, it earned the nickname “Health-History-Horses,” (with the addition of horse racing).
Downtown flourished in its early years with a wealth of grand hotels and rooming houses for visitors. It had a “Victorian” character, including the railroad station at the edge of Downtown.
In the 60s, many of Saratoga Springs historic structures were lost to Urban Renewal Programs which left vast areas of the Downtown as vacant sand lots. The 70s, however, saw the beginning of a re-birth in the Downtown with the advent of the “Saratoga Downtown Plan of Action.” The plan called for a renewal of Downtown, physically, economically, and programmatically.
The Walking Tour will begin and end in Historic Congress Park, which was partially designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Father of Landscape Architecture in the United States. In Congress Park, there are works by Daniel Patrick French (the Spirit of Life sculpture/pool) as well as many other famous design professionals. The tour will proceed along the west side of Broadway noting both historic structures and landscapes and their designers as well as new construction that has filled vacant lots created by Urban Renewal.
The tour will proceed to the north end of Downtown Broadway and then south through “the Gut,” an area to the east of Broadway and terminate in Congress Park and the Historic Bachelor Mansion. Approximately, 20-25 significant historic and newly constructed buildings and landscapes will be discussed including their importance to the development of Downtown Saratoga Spring today.
