The American Cancer Society – CCA Financial Richmond Golf Tournament has a rich history that dates back to its inception in 1989. CCA Financial, led by Mac Duke and Greg Williams teamed up with the American Cancer Society to offer Richmond area golfers a chance to enjoy a day of friendly corporate competition and to support the fight against cancer at the same time. CCA Financial has remained the Title Sponsor every year since.
Chair of the event for 14 years, Mac joined forces with Bill Goodwin and Randy Blunt of AMF Bowling, and Art McKinney of McKinney and Company who each assumed early and long-term leadership roles in supporting the tournament and helping it grow into the Richmond Men’s Golf Championship that fed into the National ACS Championship Tournament. Beginning in 2009, no longer under championship rules when the National Championship Tournament was disbanded, the Richmond Men’s Golf Championship proudly began to allow women into the golf foursomes and continued on with its unwavering tradition and mission to end cancer.
The tournament has hosted as many as 53 corporate teams in one year, and there have been at least two golfers who have won either a car or a $10,000 prize by hitting a hole-in-one on the designated hole.
The American Cancer Society established two very important awards:
* The Mac Duke Excellence in Golf Event Leadership Award
* The Bill Goodwin Award of Excellence for Volunteer Leadership in the State of Virginia.
These awards have honored the contributions of a number of people over the years who have been instrumental in not only showing commitment to the Richmond tournament, but who have also shown commitment to fighting cancer across Virginia.
The golf tournament has grown to include Coaches vs. Cancer component, an ACS event that brings college basketball coaches from around Virginia together to raise money and awareness. Coaches vs. Cancer is a national movement that teams up with golfers to get the message out to all sports enthusiasts that we must work together to end this terrible disease.
In 2013, over $180,000 was raised to support local American Cancer Society programs that are provided free to those that need them. Over the past 25 years, the ACS – CCA Financial Golf Tournament has raised over $2.1 million that is making a huge impact in supporting advocacy efforts in the VA legislature and Congress, bringing cancer education to health care providers and the public, funding ground-breaking research at local hospitals such as MCV and UVA Medical Centers, and providing free life-saving patient services to cancer patients and caregivers in Central Virginia.
