The Los Angeles Marine Scholarship Golf Tournament, now in its 39 year, was founded by the late GySgt “Charlie” Bergin, USMC. “Gunny Bergin”, as everyone called him, was a true American hero.

Charles Bergin enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 shortly after Pearl Harbor, where his older brother was killed on the USS Arizona. Gunny spent the war in the Pacific and visited many islands including Iwo Jima, where he landed on the second wave. Gunny also served in Korea, landing at Inchon and fighting his way through the peninsula including the Chosin Reservoir, earning the title of a “Frozen Chosin Marine”.

In his civilan years, Gunny recognized need to give back to the community and also to honor the Marine Corps legacy. The tournament was established with the specific goal of assisting Marine families with special emphasis on the fallen Marines and Navy Corpsmen. To this day, the tournament has funded more than 22 perpetual scholarships through the MCSF, named in honor of fallen local Marines and Navy Corpsmen from the LA and Orange County areas. As a result, over 100 students have received support from the organization allowing them to pursue their college goals towards graduation and follow on professional careers.

Although no longer with us, Gunny Bergin is undoubtedly watching from his post, smoking his cigar, drinking his scotch and yelling at the officers, pleased with what he sees. We thank you for coming and supporting this event, dedicated to this great Marine and American, and singluarly focused on supporting and educating the next great generation.
