More Event Information

The Driving “Fore” a Cure for PH Golf Tournament is held annually to raise funds and awareness to support PH research and to help find a cure. The inspiration for this golf tournament is our 8 year old son Jackson, who was diagnosed in August of 2012 with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH).

PH is a chronic, incurable, progressive, and life threatening lung disease that creates narrowing of the blood vessels in the lungs which causes additional strain on the right side of the heart. If left untreated, PH can lead to failure of the right side of the heart. Within 48 hours of Jackson being diagnosed, we were told he wouldn’t survive the disease and that he would eventually need a lung or a heart & lung transplant.

PH is often misdiagnosed as less severe conditions, such as asthma, due to the hidden/similar symptoms of PH. Because it is often misdiagnosed, the disease continues to progress, and often patients are not diagnosed until it is too late. Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) or Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (IPAH — what Jackson has) is so rare in children that only 1 in 1,000,000 are diagnosed with the disease. Because of it being so rare, even doctors do not understand the disease and treatments in its entirety.

After Jackson was formally diagnosed we began to speak with specialists at Duke Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital to create a plan on how to attack this disease. The good news is that we fortunately caught the disease early enough where treatment is still an option. There have been some significant advancements on treatments of Pulmonary Hypertension over the last 10+ years, however, there is only one approved treatment for children with PH and there is still no cure.

The 7th Annual Driving “Fore” A Cure For PH golf tournament will be held on October 25th, 2019 at Riverwood Golf Course in Clayton, NC. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for research. 100% of the proceeds will go towards research to help find a cure for this disease.
