It really is BRAIN SURGERY, but it shouldn’t have to be!
As part of the Jacaranda Summer Series, we will be hosting the first of 3 charity golf tournaments. This event will benefit the Hydrocephalus Association. Hydrocephalus is caused by an imbalance in the production and absorption of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain which causes the ventricles to enlarge. The fluid accumulates causing the symptoms of Hydrocephalus to appear. The only treatment for this condition involves brain surgery – most often inserting a medical device called a shunt to drain the excess fluid. But a shunt is not a cure! Having a shunt often results in multiple brain surgeries for a single patient – in children, dozens are common, 100+ is not rare.
This charity holds a special place in the heart of Jacaranda as the almost 3-year-old daughter (Spenser) of our CFO, Kasey Andrew, was diagnosed with this condition at 32 weeks in utero. This was caused by a blood clot in her brain and at only 2 days old she had brain surgery to place an external drain to remove the build up of cerebral spinal fluid and debris. After two weeks in the NICU she was sent home, but after a few weeks the fluid began to build up again so at barely 5 weeks old she returned to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to have a VP shunt placed into her brain to drain the fluid into her body cavity. Everything seemed to be working fine until about a week ago, when Spenser began to show signs of potential shunt malfunction (vomiting, extreme irritability, lethargy, etc.). Her parents took her to the ER and after a CT scan they were informed that two of her ventricles were enlarged and she would require her third brain surgery to repair the shunt. The surgery was performed and to the relief of everyone she was sent home with her family. But this can (and likely will) happen again.
